Submit Your Blog to a Directory Service

I’ve been looking into ways to increase my traffic here and one of the methods I’ve seen is to submit your blog or web site to a directory service like dmoz.org. It’s a little confusing to actually do it, though. Each directory service has its own rules and requirements for submission that you must generally follow to a tee in order to have a chance of being accepted.

I don’t know the relative value of being listed in a directory other than that it’s another link to your blog and thus will have a positive affect on your search engine rankings which then should help to increase the number of people who find your blog. With that said, check out Write a Directory Submission That Gets Accepted by Lara from Anubis Marketing for some useful tips for writing your submission.

Thanks for the link love, Ray!

I’ll tell you this much: Directory links provide benefits that some people don’t really expect sometimes. They really are viewed by some people as the best way to be “categorized” in terms of search results, but also because – believe it or not – there are a number of people out there who actually use directories to find what they’re looking for. ESPECIALLY niche-specific and regional directories.

Just something to watch out for: Check through the directory listings and try to make sure that you’re getting a direct link (unless it’s a super specific niche directory – then you should grab the link anyway for the traffic). Many so-called directories out there will use cgi redirects to link to those listed. This will give you no “link juice” whatsoever, and the search engines won’t ever notice it.

Anyway, thanks again for the link, and do stay tuned to the site as I plan on adding regular articles like this one! :)

My pleasure, Lara. Thanks for providing the informative articles. I also appreciate the additional insight you’ve added. Do you have a comprehensive list on your site that includes all the major directories we should be looking at?

I’m planning on adding that soon, actually! The truth is, there are SO MANY good places out there, and it would be absolutely impossible for me to transfer my entire spreadsheet “book” to the site. But I will soon post a section with some of the “majors” on it! :)

That’s great. Please let me know as I’ll definitely want to link to it.
