They really are viewed by some people as the best way to be "categorized" in terms of search results, but also because - believe it or not - there are a number of people out there who actually use directories to find what they're looking for. ESPECIALLY niche-specific and regional directories. Just something to watch out for: Check through the directory listings and try to make sure that you're getting a direct link (unless it's a super specific niche directory - then you should grab the link anyway for the traffic). Many so-called directories out there will use cgi redirects to link to those listed. This will give you no "link juice" whatsoever, and the search engines won't ever notice it.
