This is a question that a lot of bloggers are asking, especially new bloggers. I’ve wondered about this myself, too. There are times when it’s not the highest priority for me to put up a post on my blog. With life being so busy, I always have what seems like 50 different things I could or should be doing at any given time. If you’re serious about your blogging, though, it’s important to pay attention to how often you post.

Here are a few guidelines:

  1. Post on a regular basis. You may not be able to post every single day, but you should try to post on some sort of consistent timetable. This might be 3 times a day or it might be once a week. Much less than that will tend to not draw in much traffic.
  2. Post good content. Ever heard of re-blogging? This is the practice of just posting with a short link to another blog’s post without much commentary on the topic. A certain amount of this is ok, but using it excessively will make readers turn from your blog to those with real content. Even if your blog is a sort of news aggregator, writing a paragraph or two in response or adding to the linked content will make your post much more interesting.
  3. Stay on topic. If your blog is a niche blog, your posts should primarily stay focused on your niche topic. If it’s a personal blog, then your posts can be anything you want them to be, but should still follow the above guidelines.

If you’re having trouble keeping to a blogging schedule, try giving yourself a little break and reevaluating where you want to go with your blog. If you push yourself too hard, you’ll burn out fast and possibly lose your love for blogging. With a little experimentation, you’ll find a schedule that works for you and your readers.

Ray, this one is tricky. I guess there are no easy answers. I feel it depends on your priorities. How important is your blog for you? If it is just a hobby than you can or cannot post as you wish. On the other hand if it is a part of serious income generating activity on which your living may depend, than you should cancel or put off even pressing social obligations just to stay regular.

Hi Syed. That’s an important consideration as well. Most blogs are started just for fun or personal fulfillment. If it’s a business venture then it’s going to call for much more discipline.
