If you’re not brand new to this blog and you had to think quickly, what would you say my name was? Ray? Roy? I guess I have one of those names that’s easy to confuse. I know a bunch of you have checked out the About page to get to know a little bit about me, so you’re probably aware of my name. Yes, it’s actually Ray with an A, but I get called Roy fairly often.
What’s funny is that I just sat in a meeting yesterday with people I’ve worked with for years and we went over a project plan that had my name on it: Roy Dotson. Kind of funny, huh? The person who wrote the project plan has known me for at a least a year, too. Is it a conspiracy?
So, I sat through this meeting and not one person mentioned that my name was spelled wrong. This makes me wonder if this type of mistake is one of those that people just don’t see. Research has shown that people’s brains tend to fill in details that their eyes don’t see or possibly what they haven’t had time to consciously see. There is so much information bombarding us each day that our brains have to filter out a great deal of it. It looks like my name is one of those things being filtered out.
Maybe I should just give up. I can accept it. Roy isn’t a bad name, is it? Roy Rogers was the King of the Cowboys. If only I could be more like him. Well, except for being dead, that is. I think I can be more useful alive.
Ultimately, the people who know me, actually do know me regardless of what they call me. I have people who know me quite well who just call me “Hey, Dude.” I suppose it’s not so bad. I might even be able to get used to being a Roy. Feel free to let me know what you think. Thanks,
Roy

They call me Dan. I thought I was the only person this happens to.
I found your blog. From what I can tell you want others to find it. Well have a good one.
Hey Don. It’s just something curious, isn’t it? Doesn’t even bother me much, but I tend to notice when people do it. Maybe it’s my ego, but I wonder sometimes if I left much of an impression on them. LOL.
Marcus, my star pupil! I’m glad you found me. I haven’t heard from anyone else yet, but I expect certain stalkers will eventually catch up to me. I hope you stop by again.
This whole name thing must be a relatively new thing to you. Just imagine having a name like mine. Imagine how it gets sliced and diced until you can’t recognize it anymore. As time has gone on I’ve given up on correcting people on how to say it correctly unless they are genuinely interested. You might consider using the name Raymond instead of the nickname. I really can’t imagine anyone calling you Roymond, but at the same time I am sure there is someone who might be that guy who does do that. Star pupil? Wow! I thought that a title like that would be reserved for someone who knows everything aka Brian. Well I think your stalkers might have difficulty finding you seeing at least one of them doesn’t even know how to use e-mail.
LOL. I’m sure your name has been mangled pretty good, but at least it’s one of those unforgettable names that sticks with you when you hear it. As for my name: Unfortunately, it’s just ‘Ray’ and not ‘Raymond’ so I don’t have too much choice unless I want to go with something like “The Teacher/Blogger/Writer formerly known as Ray.”
P.S. Do you think my stalkers are desperate enough to learn how to use email? LOL
