Results of the Alexa Rank Experiment
Published December 30th, 2006 in SEO/Traffic/LinksYaro has posted a follow up article on the Alexa Rank experiment. This experiment involved installing an Alexa Rank Widget on your web site or blog and watching to see your Alexa Rank improved. The results appear to be mixed. Of course, this all has to be taken with a grain of salt because none of us knows for sure what factors are included in Alexa’s algorithms.
My own results have been satisfactory if not stellar. I started out with an Alexa Rank of 739,195 and right now the widget is showing a rank of 616,241. This is about a 16.6% improvement since the beginning of the experiment. It’s true that the Alexa Rank for this blog has been improving slowly over the last few months, but this appears to be the largest increase over such a short time.
If you’ve had some success or even none with this widget, let me know in the comments section.

Congrats man …hope it works for me too..
Hi Madhur. I’d be interested in hearing how well it does for others. I’ve been reading up on Alexa Rank and it seems that there are some sites ranking much better than mine even though we have about the same amount of traffic. I’m wondering how much the age of the site has to do with things. Any movement in the right direction is good, though.
The button has no relevance on results.
Alexa Buttons DO NOT Help Alexa Rankings
Hi Mark. Your post seems to clear the issue up. I’m still puzzled by the changes we’re seeing and also by the differences between sites that seem to be fairly similar. The more I learn, the less I understand about all these ranking systems. All I know is that they are affecting my ability to sell ads on this site! Thanks for your input.

I get the crazy results regardless of whether I have an Alexa button or not.
The only surefire way I’ve ever increased my alexa was installing the toolbar and making a site my homepage. Sent the rank skyrocketing. However that has been over a year ago, not sure if it still works.
Hey Mark, I’ve noticed mine goes up and down sometimes every day now and that it doesn’t match the one that shows up on Alexa’s own page! I’m starting to use the Search Status plugin for Firefox with the Alexa Rank enabled, so I believe that should have the same effect as the toolbar.
I’m also wondering if and how Alexa Rank and Page Rank are linked. Right now I still have PR of zero since this blog’s so new, but after the next update I’ll see if my Alexa Rank seems to be affected, too. I suppose we can expect an update in the next few weeks…
