AdSense TOS Now Allows Competing Contextual Ads
Published January 22nd, 2007 in adsense, googleAnother change to Google’s AdSense TOS as reported by Darren at ProBlogger is that they will now allow competing contextual advertising to be shown on the same page. I don’t know if this news is good, bad, or indifferent. To me, I’m wondering if I’ve already got too much advertising on this blog. I think my next design change will involve cutting back on the advertisement again.
Every so often, I make some changes and try to minimize ads. They seem to creep in over time and I don’t want them to take over Fresh Blogger. Still, this blog is supported by advertising and most readers realize that advertising is at worst a necessary evil. At best, though, it’s another service we bloggers can offer our readers: displaying relevant advertising for products or services they may be interested in.
As far as AdSense is concerned, the full effects of the changes in Google’s Terms of Service have not been seen yet. Hopefully, this will clarify things for bloggers and website owners so that it will be easier to stay within the terms. So, for most, I doubt if there will be any earth-shaking changes in the online advertising world.

While they are allowing competing contextual ads, they are not allowing anything that looks like a Google ad. For example, your AdBrite block could be suspect.

How can you make money without the ads for a blog?
Hi Adam. Yeah, I was thinking about the AdBrite ad. It’s not making much money for me anyway, but I was holding out in the hopes that I could sell some text links. The ads showing on it are all network ads so far and the CTR sucks. I think I can make better use of the space. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the link. I’ll check it out.
Hey Noah. I know. I’ll always have some advertising, but I don’t want to put it in my readers’ face too much. Once it gets to the point of interfering with the content, then it’s time to cut back. There are some ways of making money from a blog without using ads, though. If you get work because of your blog or generate business leads or even refer readers to an affiliate product, you can make some money, even if it may be indirectly. Thanks for commenting.
