Some will perhaps criticize me for linking to Black Hat SEO, but this post is full of true wisdom and is most timely right now. Quadzilla has posted an article about how to make more money in 2007 and his advice is dead on. He says you should focus this year on being the CEO of your little internet empire rather than focusing on all the individual roles that comprise what it takes to run your web ventures. That is to say, instead of always thinking as a programmer, and SEO, or just the content writer, you need to view yourself as the one in charge of all these things.

What this means operationally is that you should have a good idea of what your time is worth and don’t spend time doing things that would be cheaper to hire out to someone for a lower price. So, how much is your time worth? If your time is worth, say, $50 an hour, and you are spending two hours a week checking your stats multiple times a day, then you’ve just blown $100 a week. You could be spending that time making money rather than wasting the time doing something that is probably not adding value to your enterprise.

This is something I’ve talked about many times before on this blog and will again because I, like many of you, struggle with it every day. It’s all about opportunity cost. How much could I be accomplishing during this time I’m spending doing something useless. Am I wasting my time learning to program in PHP when I could probably get someone to do it for me or buy something off the shelf for much cheaper?

There’s plenty of food for thought in this post. Check it out. Think about it. And then come back and let me know what you think.

Logically the points do make sense, however for me:

I enjoy checking my stats, programming, building websites, and many times writing content.

It may cost me in the long run financially but I’m much happier doing things myself, it’s the reason I play this game.

I’m with you on this one, Mark. I’m a programmer by trade so I want to do all the coding myself. I also majored in writing in college, so, of course, I want to do all the writing myself. In fact, I want to do it all myself.

I still struggle with this all the time. Because I can do all of it doesn’t mean that I should do all of it. Maybe, again, it’s just a matter of focusing on the goals I want to accomplish. If me doing everything will be an efficient means of propelling me toward that goal, then it’s okay. If not, then I should be looking for help.

I’m really just searching for the key ingredients that will get me past the current plateau and into the next stage of the game. Oh, and I’m also a stats junkie. I’m sure I can quit checking anytime I want, though. Honest. Thanks for commenting.

I agree with the point, but its always slow at the start. If i start calculating how much time i have given my blog in increase my popularity by double in a month, it will be not worthful.

Everything comes with a time, not everything we can caculate on money.Sometimes the payment is later and work is before

Yeah, Ashish. It would be great if we could actually calculate the exact cost of our actions. For example, which activity of mine makes me the most money per hour? I’m not sure. Also, if I knew how much it might be costing me to waste my time, I would probably be less inclined to waste so much…

LOL. Hang in there, Rob. Sometimes it can really take a while to get anywhere with this web stuff. Also, most people successful in any area of life have tried and failed many times before they eventually succeeded. Thanks for your comment and good luck!

Ideas are way too important for you to spend your time doing all of that repetitive work to get your name out there. Hire out. Spend your time thinking creativity and doing the work that really matters to you. Being head of your own little company means leading the way and moving into new territory.
