More Gmail Drama

It seems there’s another security issue involving Google’s GMail: GMail Vulnerable To Contact List Hijacking. I just posted recently about another potential problem with GMail that seems to have affected very few users. This new vulnerability apparently can allow a malicious website to get at the contents of your GMail contact list by running JavaScript commands while you’re still logged into your Google account.

As far as how many users may have had their contact information stolen up to this point, no one seems to know. Again, at the risk of sounding too jaded about this type of thing, I’m not too worried about it. This type of vulnerability seems to be fairly common in web software today and across most if not all modern internet browsers.

Some are reporting that Google has already responded with a fix to this issue. It sounds like they’ve reacted pretty quickly and put in a simple fix that will prevent most of the damage. Others have pointed out that there are still vulnerabilities in GMail that can be exploited by malicious hacks.

Really, though, this is something that will never go away. There will always be someone out there on the internet trying to do bad things with your data. All we can do is to use our common sense and try to be as safe as possible in our surfing habits. And, yes, I still like GMail and will continue using it in the future.
