A Little Bit About Freelance Blogging

Science Fiction writer Toby Buckell has posted a little bit about his experience with finding freelance blogging work. I know a lot of people are interested in doing this kind of stuff, but many don’t know where to start. Toby gives a few good places to begin your search and also mentions an important point to consider.

This important point that you should always remember is that the posts you are paid to write will actually take you time to write. I know this is obvious, but it’s something that we don’t always consider when we look at the money and start adding up the potential in our heads. Consider that if you are paid $3 per post and you post 100 articles per month, that’s $300 per month, right? That sounds pretty good.

How much time does it take you to write each of those posts, though? Make sure you include all of the time you must spend preparing and researching your topic. All this adds up and it must be included if you want to have a good idea of what kind of return you’re getting for your time and energy.

If it takes you about an hour of research, brainstorming, and writing, then you’re making $3 an hour. How much can you make flipping burgers? Even if you’re able to put together two posts in an hour, it’s still only $6 an hour (and this is before expenses and taxes have been taken out, too).

Don’t think that I’m against this sort of job, though. It can be great to make a few bucks here and there from paid blogging. I’ve done it myself and will do it again. Just be realistic about how much you’re going to be making and also about how much time you’ll have to put into it. It’s going to take a pretty darn good deal for you to be able to quit your day job.
