Productivity Lesson #1: Do It Now

I just read another post on SEOBlackHat that I found worthwhile. Thanks to Shoemoney for pointing to a more work safe version of the URL. I won’t repeat the exact wording of the key phrase and title of the post on SEOBlackHat, but the gist of it is that whatever plans you have, they are only worthless dreams unless you do it now.

Quadzilla (that’s the handle of the proprietor of SEOBlackHat) includes some profanity in the phrase and also adds a nice quote from Shakespeare at the end of the post. These help to emphasize the importance of not procrastinating when there’s work to be done. The profanity is intended to jar the reader into realizing what a waste it is if he or she just sits idly and lets opportunity pass.

While I won’t comment on the effectiveness of presenting the idea in this fashion, I will say that this is a lesson that each of us who is interested in making money on the internet needs to take to heart. If you need to write this phrase out in big letters and post it where you’ll see if every day, then do it. Do it now.

I’ve posted a bit on setting goals and tracking productivity and wasting time, etc, but the bottom line of it all is that you have to make yourself actually take some sort of useful action in order to accomplish anything. We can surf and chat and plot and scheme and dream the days and nights away without doing a thing that’s useful in our quest to make money or achieve something else. It doesn’t matter if you’d like to climb a mountain, write a book or just make it to work on time each day. If you want to get to the point of success, you have to stop procrastinating and take some progressive action right away.

I like this phrase a lot, with or without profanity. I had a talk with my boss at my day job a couple of years ago and that was the first time I heard this phrase. We were discussing some phase of a project that wasn’t moving along quickly enough and he just came out with “do it now.” He explained that in his management training, that was one of the most important ideas he’d ever heard and it had changed his life.

I agree that the whole concept of doing it now can change a person’s life. It’s short and sweet. It instantly cuts through all of the excuses and gets to the heart of the issue: Action is what creates success. Inaction breeds stagnation and eats away at motivation. Inaction leads to boredom which is one of the greatest depressive, soporific forces in the universe.

If you have an idea to develop, a task to accomplish, a book to write, don’t sit and wait for the perfect time to arrive; it won’t. Take the time right now to jot down some notes, make a sketch, call for some information and get the ball rolling. This is all you. Do it now.
