What Does It Take To Keep A Blog Alive?
7 Comments Published March 23rd, 2007 in PageRank, SEO/Traffic/Links, blogging, blogsA great question has come up over at the recently retired BloggingBlog: Is Blogging Blog Really Dead? The real question is what does it really take to keep a blog alive and it came up as a result of Garry’s comment on Leroy’s final post there. Garry runs an Online Marketing blog with lots of great information.
If you’ve been reading FreshBlogger for a while you’ll know that I wrote guest posts over at Blogging Blog for a bit. Unfortunately, neither Leroy nor I were able to devote sufficient time to be able to keep the blog going. Or were we? I think this is a great question. I asked it over there in a new guest post and I’ll ask it again over here on FreshBlogger. Is a new post once a month or so worth the trouble of coming back to check out a blog?
Keep in mind, this is a blog with some good backlinks and PageRank of 4. I know the holy grail of blogging is good content frequently posted, but is one post every month or so enough to keep a blog alive? What would you do with a site like this that obviously has some value?

In case it makes some revenue I’d invest everything into hiring one or two bloggers to keep the blog going. It has already some value so it would be pity to let it die. Second option I would consider is selling it.
I forgot to answer your question in my previous comment
. I think that blog like Blogging Blog should be updated very frequently. I can image blog with the solar system theme being updated only once a month but blogging is something that is changing so fast that it needs frequent updates. My two cents
You know, maybe you are on to something here. Perhaps, instead of focusing on posting once a day ish, we could take a different angle. Maybe 1-3 posts per month, something low like that. But more in-depth, thought out articles. And the key to it all, more promotion of the site.
So rather than posting at a rabid pace to pull in traffic, simply promote the lesser amount of content more heavily.
I don’t know if it will work or not… heck my lack of sleep issue could really be catching up with me.. haven’t slept well in weeks.
Anyway I’m going to think this over and I’ll get in touch with you next week to throw some ideas around.
Yeah, Garry’s comment really got me thinking, too. It’s a shame for a PR4 site to just sit there. I know what you mean about the sleep issues, too. Must be contagious…
Good points, Jaro. This could be a good experiment, too. Blogging is definitely a fast-paced niche, but I wonder if the niche could be narrowed down a little bit or maybe larger issues could be focused on. Regardless, it definitely IS a shame to waste a site like this. Another thing to think about is what I wrote about in this post: Flipping Websites Versus Building Your Internet Empire.
sell it or continue to post regularly (daily)
Hi Broc. Those were my first thoughts on the whole thing, too, but I think it’s worth exploring what can happen to a blog over time if posting is relatively sparse. Check out the link about flipping websites I gave in the comment above and see what you think…
