Sunday Blogging: Do You Take Days Off?
Published July 15th, 2007 in blogging, blogsI know it’s been a few days since I’ve written a post. Give me a break! I’ve been busy. Seriously, though, my usual routine of posting lately has been to try to write 3-5 posts per week, usually on the weekdays. I’ve tried to make writing articles for FreshBlogger a regular part of my workday mornings.
When I started getting serious about blogging, I was attempting to post at least once a day, seven days a week, and sometimes I would even get out more than one post a day. I wasn’t able to sustain this pace, though, for a number of reasons. In retrospect, I do think it’s probably better to focus more on the quality of content rather than the frequency of posting, as long as you’re posting enough to keep your blog alive. I discussed volume blogging recently, too.
So, my question, is: Do you take days off from blogging? What’s your normal routine? I assume most people have daily lives built on routines and that their blogging must be a part of that. However, I don’t always notice the patterns of posting that other bloggers have. Leave comments and let me know what your posting habits are like and what you consider enough to maintain your traffic. Another question to consider: Do weekend posts count as much as weekday posts? Is it worthwhile?

I do see new faces on that mybloglog widget Ray but I have no idea why there are no comments here
So, one thing you can do is post your picture or avatar here
[of course I am kidding]
Seriously though, in the short time I have been blogging, I have felt that quality and length of the articles is always more important than quantity. If there hasn’t been any update for a few days, I feel people are likely to get busy somewhere else and you may feel you have lost traffic for short term, but the established readers will always come back for quality!
The biggest disadvantage of a blog related to a very laser-target niche is that sometime is hard to have “items” to post about.
But, as about freshblogger.com (and you, Ray), remember about pre-posting.
Me, I`m try to stay in limits of 5 - 7 post a week and not post twice a day (despite what is been said about multiple post / day, I don`t want to go in “10 lines posting” area).
The content and frequency of blog`s post is owner`s option and readers will automatically select and will stay tunned only intersted ones - intersted about the subject(s), about your style, about ypur way to be. Blogging is about building a community of people alike, is about communication both ways, is about share and exchange …
And I`ll visit you everyday, even if I know I mught not find everyday a new post.
I’ve recently started a thought of the day post, which I am going to try and make sure gets done every day. I like the simplicity of that. I might be able to combine it with nice photos I have taken myself if I get my act together, as well.
I don’t like to take a day off from blogging but there’s so much scope - you can just post a photo, or links, or something which caught your eye. My longer posts which take more time, like movie reviews etc, I try not to do too often. I think there has to be decent variations in post length, if they’re all long people will get bored easily.. But maybe that’s just my thoughts on it.. I could be wrong..

Hi Pearl. I think you’ve got the right idea. It always comes back to the content. What this really means in most cases, is that it comes down to your own unique voice and outlook on the world. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks, Valentin. It definitely is hard to come up with something to say every day that pertains to any particular niche. It’s much easier to post about anything that might happen to be on your mind that particular day. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always fit into your niche topic.
I agree that those multiple, 10 line posts every day are sometimes lacking in substance. I don’t spend much time on blogs that post like that.
Thanks for always coming back, man!
Hi Snoskred. Those are great ideas for mixing things up. Doing different things like that is a great way to keep readers coming back and also to attract new ones. In fact, that is a great idea for a post. You could write a list of new ways to keep your posts fresh. And, of course, I’ll link to you! Thanks for your comment!
Hi, Ray!
I’m not taking myself off for Sunday. Sunday have become my golden time to tweak my blog since I have to work from Monday to Saturday. If you’d like to check my routine schedules, I have published it in this post.
I tend to post 3-4 times a week. Then again, I can’t boast that I have a ton of traffic either, more of a consistent and slowly growing group of readers. But I do a ton of writing at work, and not blogging daily is my way of making sure that I leave enough creative energy left over for other projects, like the collection of short stories I’m always complaining about not having time to write : ).
Hi Ken. Wow! That’s a really packed schedule! I admire your dedication. Once you get things going, though, will you slow down a little bit and give yourself more time off?
Hey, Pam. I can understand that. For a lot of blogs, 3-4 times a week seems to be a perfect posting frequency. If the articles are in-depth and thought-provoking (as yours are!), then it’s difficult for readers to take in all that information more than a few times a week. Thanks for commenting!
Oh, of course, Ray!
It is impossible for me to work with that schedules for my whole live! I will slow down when I have a achieve my first & second goals. Thanks for visiting and your supports, Ray!
I used to post every day; I too, since found that to be unsustainable though. I make sure I fire out at least five articles a week now; this means my work rate is sustainable and my readers know not to expect new articles over the weekend.

Like you, I try to post each and every day. Sometimes I’m just not inspired, though, so I don’t force it. If you check my posts, the majority of of them are posted late at night. I’m a night owl, and I do my best work in the wee hours of the morning. Oh, and also like you, I am addicted to blogging! That’s how I was able to survive 24 hours of straight blogging recently on my other blog, blogsweluv.com.
I’m glad to have discovered your blog! I’ll be coming back for sure.
Hey Martin. I think the lesson here is that we just have to pace ourselves. Too much can just add to all the other stresses in life. We want less of that, right? Thanks for your comment!
Hi Tish! Great point. It really helps to find that time when we’re most productive, too. That must have been quite an adventure to blog for 24 hours straight! Coffee or cocktails, or both? Sounds like fun. I’m glad you found me, too. Thanks for commenting!
