How Much Blogging Income Is Significant?
13 Comments Published August 13th, 2007 in blogging, blogs, goals, income, jobs, life, moneyThis is a question that is completely subjective, of course, but an important one nonetheless. Most of us who blog and who have an interest in generating some sort of income from blogging activities set goals for reaching different stages of income. These range from very small, shorter term goals, like making enough to pay for hosting, to longer term goals, such as making enough to do away with the day job.
In light of Adnan of Blogtrepreneur’s recent announcement of making more than $500 a month from blogging, it’s a good time to ask this question again. Firstly, congratulations to Adnan! To me, this is an awesome accomplishment, especially for one so young.
The question really is, though, how much does it take to finally make the effort worth it? Some bloggers put a lot of time into blogging, sometimes several hours every day, and often it’s a long time before any of that effort begins to pay off. So, at what point does it become enough income to make a real change in your life?
Before someone chimes in about not blogging for money, I understand that idea. How many of us are working our day jobs because we love it? Why does blogging have to be different? One of the main niches of this site is making money from blogging, though, so it’s entirely OK if that’s the main reason you write your blog and perfectly appropriate as a topic of discussion. Also, most of us have more than one reason why we blog, and making money is only one of them.
With that said, then, how much is significant for you? Did you have a particular milestone that was able to affect a positive change in your lifestyle? Another great example of this type of thing is Mark from 45n5.com. He was able to quit his day job and begin blogging and working on other internet projects full time after he reached one of his milestones. If you have a milestone that you’d like to share, leave a comment and tell us about it.

Hey Ray – thanks for the linkout buddy.
For me, a significant income is earning the same as some of my friends do working 4 weekdays in the holidays stacking shelves at the super market at $10/hour. So this would be around $300 a week which is $1200 a month. At this point, I would be very happy knowing that I earn around the minimum wage in the UK.
Hi Adnan. That’s a great answer. When we compare the dollars to what it actually is worth in real world living expenses, it really puts things in perspective. For example, $30 might be a tank of gas (petrol) in the US right now. $300 would make an average car payment while $500 or $600 might pay the rent. Thanks for stopping by!
thanks for the mention ray
it helps when you have a wife or partner paying the other half of the bills
I also don’t keep a car payment.
Now my goal is to get my girlfriend out of working by making enough to cover her half.
Of course the answer is relative…
The question is: do you blog for money or for blogging? If you blog for money, you stand no change, whereas if you blog for blogging, money will eventually come.
How much a blogger earn from blogging ?
Well, if you`ll ask me, blogging is NOT meant to make money.
To blog, blogging, is expressing one`s opinions.
Earnings generated by a blog is or should be indirect related to blogging, and more related to blog visitors than blog readers-commenters-blogger.
Content of your blog generate :
-readers-commenters
-contextual ads for visitors.
Visitors may be 65341313434344, yet blog`s public (readers-commenters) only 2. Then, the blog ceased to be a blog and become a dayly updated site.
Visitors may be 5445 and readers 600. That is a blog. 600 commenters mean 600 potential buyers of something you may promote once in a while to them. Yet, if you sell them something to often, you may loose them …
I think there is no harm in making money from blog. If you can express your ideas and in turn make money from ads then what’s the harm in it ?
Hey OOM. I disagree that it can’t be profitable blogging for money as your primary purpose. I don’t see any reason why it can’t be the same as any other business. I don’t program computers because I love it and am passionate about it. I do it because I’m good at it and it pays the bills.
On the flip side, if you’re passionate about your blogging then it can be much easier to make money from it. But, let me dispel a myth for everyone: just because you’re passionate about your blogging doesn’t mean you’ll ever make more than pennies from it. Most people who make significant money from blogging do so with a combination of passion, running it like a business, and yes, luck. Thanks for commenting!
Valentin, that brings up a good point: how much of the income a blog makes comes from regular readers and how much from, say, google traffic? The search engine visitors tend to click the ads far more often than regular readers, I’m sure…
Hi TipsoSaurus. That’s true and it’s the coolest thing about blogging. You can talk about stuff you’re interested in and make money doing it. Thanks for your comment!
It’s been a while since I’ve popped in and commented at FB. Things look great Ray.
As for the whole blogging vs income topic, it sorta goes along the same lines as the “is a blogger a journalist” line. It is what it is for each and every blogger.
As for substantial income, that too varies. For me, I see substantial as being the amount of income one needs to blog full time. In the past year, I’ve had ups and downs ranging from $200 a month to $700 a month. Once we can get things consistently in the $1500 a month mark, I’ll take it full time as the growth will be exponential then.
Hi Gary. Thanks! It has been a while. I’m glad you stopped by. Those are some great numbers. It also seems like the more you make, the easier it is to make more money. Once you break into the four-figures monthly blog income, it starts to really sound significant. Thanks for commenting and I hope to see you around here more often!
Don’t worry Ray, I still read, just don’t have the time to comment on as many posts as I’d like to.
