Personality Type and Blogging
Published August 31st, 2007 in blogging, blogs, ideas, writingI’m finally getting around to posting on this one. Michael Haislip conducted an interesting experiment regarding how your personality type affects your blogging. The idea of the experiment was to find out what a blogger’s personality type as determined by the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator can tell us about the blogger’s writing style and blogging habits. You can check out the Jungian typology test that we all took and find out your own type.
Michael has done some great research here and I think it also gives some insights into how to be a more successful blogger by being true to your own personality type. I’ve often wondered why I get bored easily and seem to falter at times in my blogging and in other pursuits. After taking the test, my type turned out to be ENFP or the Champion Type. Michael quotes the following description of this type in his post (I believe it comes from Wikipedia):
ENFPs are both “ideaâ€-people and “peopleâ€-people, who see everyone and everything as part of an often bizarre cosmic whole. They want to both help (at least, their own definition of “helpâ€) and be liked and admired by other people, on both an individual and a humanitarian level. They are interested in new ideas on principle, but ultimately discard most of them for one reason or another. ENFPs have a great deal of zany charm, which can ingratiate them to the more stodgy types in spite of their unconventionality. They are outgoing, fun, and genuinely like people. ENFPs are pleasant, easygoing, and usually fun to work with. They come up with great ideas, and are a major asset in brainstorming sessions.
I find this fascinating. I’m going to take a little bit of time to consider this as I’ve been thinking about this idea for a while. I was preparing a post about personal writing and blogging styles and this will influence what I was going to say. Read Michael’s original post for a description of some other types of bloggers who participated. My apologies to Michael for taking such a long time to post on this great experiment!

I’m on the line with E/I
and very much NFP. Both INFP and ENFP describe me pretty well. My writing style, I’m not very sure. All I know is that I’m terrible proof reader and tend to get ahead myself when I write making my writing sometimes a bit disjointed. I’ll assume I’v explained a concept when I haven’t really.
What a great idea - I’m glad you pointed out this post! I love all things Myers-Briggs anyway. A work friend and I actually have this obnoxious habit of trying to type-guess our co-workers and then having them take the test to see if we were right. So thinking about how type impacts blogging is a fascinating idea to me. Guess it must an “NFP” thang (I’m an INFP, but pretty borderline on the E/I scale).
Glad to finally hear from you. Thanks for the link.
The idea that a personality type influences one’s blogging seems me to be very old. It is a well known fact, that a personality type influences our speach habits, the way we communicate with other people, the way we create different texts. So, it is an old idea just in a new interepretation.
