Are You Restless?

From time to time I get this feeling of restlessness that I simply can’t seem to shake. Maybe it’s my own type of ADHD that causes me to get bored with the things I’m currently doing or possibly it’s a subconscious alert that I’ve been slacking in some way and need to get moving again. Either way, it’s another facet of what I wrote about in an earlier post called Discomfort Is a Call to Action.

I don’t know if I’m any different from anyone else in this regard, but if I feel like my forward progress has stalled on any particular front, I know it’s time to make some changes. Maybe it’s time to learn a new skill, go back to school for that MBA, or even just start a hobby. Or, maybe it’s time for me to start blogging again.

Over the last few months I’ve lost a lot of readers due to my own lack of posting. At one time I had more than 1200 subscribers to my RSS feed. I’ve been thinking about this blog a lot lately, but today is the first time I’ve logged on and actually started to write a post. I performed some much-needed maintenance and upgraded to the latest version of WordPress.

It feels good to be working with FreshBlogger again. I’ve had this blog through a number of significant changes in my life and I believe it really helped me to write about things, even when unrelated to the events going on behind the scenes. It also was a great help to be a member of the blogging community and to be supported through tough times by my blogging friends.

So, what am I trying to say in this meandering post? I think I’m trying to say that I’m restless (duh!) and that I’m going to make a renewed effort to begin posting again on a regular (or irregular) basis. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts!

Hey Ray.. what a nice surprise to see a post from you! You know I’ve been going through similar state of mind where posting on a regular basis is a struggle and contrary to what the blogging pundits say that you shouldn’t really be blogging if you have to struggle to write, well I disagree.. I think its easy to give up writing but forcing ourselves to get our thoughts out of our minds and get others conversing and giving their opinions can only help to get some clarity

So, as difficult as it has been on my front, I’m not giving up and I am glad you are also going to make an effort to revive this blog… my bests and I look forward to reading more from you..

Restless sums it up for me. I’ve been unsure of my direction, and just plain fidgetty, for about 12 months. I started looking at things to change seriously in July.
For want of a concrete direction, I made a list of 101 things. I figure that the small changes and new things I try will give me clues to a better direction.
Great to see your post! I’m looking forward to seeing what changes you come up with.

Hi Pearl. It’s great to hear from you! I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through the same struggle, though, but I’m sure it’s very common amongst writers of all kinds. Life has a way of changing and we have to adapt. Sometimes our writing is one of those things we have to sacrifice (or choose to sacrifice) for a time.

Hey Kazari – It seems like an epidemic, huh? I like your idea of the list of things. I also like your blog. Thanks for commenting and I hope to hear from you again soon.

    Welcome back.

I think restlessness is inevitable when there are so many choices these days. It usually can be fixed by a break, such as what you took from posting for a while.

I get fascinated with so many different topics, books, etc. that I find myself flitting from one to the other without being able to focus on just one. That’s a type of restlessness too.

When I have a big deadline looming in front of me, I force-focus and get it done. But the restlessness you experienced is very familiar to me.

Hi Ray, welcome back. Sometimes its good to take a little break now and then. I think you have done a great job, so keep up the great work! Looking forward to reading more from you down the road. -Tony

Hi Flora. Thanks! I couldn’t agree more with your statement about too many choices. I’ve blogged about that concept before and I think it is very true. There’s so much information and stimulation to be absorbed these days that it’s really hard for many of us to completely focus on one thing for a while. Thanks for commenting!

Hey Tony. It’s great to be back. You’re so right about taking a break. Sometimes that really does help to put things in perspective and even shows you how much you missed something that was a regular part of your life. Thanks for your comment!
